Supreme Court

On 23rd April, 2019, the Supreme Court has directed the Gujarat Government to pay compensation of 50 lakh rupees, government jobs and housing for the Bano. During the Gujarat riots in 2002, Bin Bano was a victim of gang rape.

The Gujarat government informed the bench chaired by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that action has been taken against the police officials who missed the case. Their pension benefits have been discontinued and the IPS officer who has been convicted by the Bombay High Court has been given two ranks.

The Gujarat government had proposed to pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation to Balkis Bano, which he had turned down. He had demanded exemplary compensation from the state government in a petition before the Supreme Court. In the Supreme Court, the bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Sanjeev Khanna raised the compensation amount 10 times.
