- On 3 January 2019, the Parliament passed the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
- The Parliament empowered states to detain weak students in the same class if they fail to pass annual exams.
- As per the current provisions of RTE Act, no student can be detained up to class 8th.
- The bill also allows the reintroduction of examinations for primary schools.
