Orphanage trafficking to be treated as slavery


  • ‘Modern Slavery Bill’ was passed by Australian Parliament on 29 November 2018.
  • Under the new law, ‘orphanage trafficking’ will be treated as a slavery and trafficking offence.
  • Australia has become the first country in the world to recognise ‘orphanage trafficking’ as a form of slavery.
  • Orphanage trafficking is where children are actively recruited into orphanages for profit purposes.
