Burundi names Gitega as new capital

  1. Burundi government declared the small central city of Gitega as the country’s new political capital on 22 December 2018.
  2. Burundi’s previous capital Bujumbura will function as the country’s economic centre.
  3. Cabinet meetings will henceforth be held in Gitega, where five ministries will also be established from the start of 2019.
  4. Pierre Nkurunziza is the President of Burundi.
