Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday inaugurated the first India-bulit war memorial in northern France to pay tribute to thousands of Indian soldiers who fought selflessly and made supreme sacrifices during the World War I.


Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, who is on a three-day visit to Paris, will represent India at the Armistice of World War I centenary commemoration today. Armistice Day marks the 100 years since the end of World War One on 11 November 1918.
French President Macron has invited over 70 world leaders and chiefs of international bodies, including United Nations and International Monetary Fund for the ceremony in Paris to commemorate the Armistice of First World War. Earlier yesterday, the Vice President unveiled the Indian Armed Forces Memorial at Villers-Guislain town. India constructed this war memorial at Villers Guislain to highlight the contribution of the soldiers of the undivided India to the freedom of France in the World War I. The land in Villers-Guislain was donated by French government to Government of India for constructing the memorial.
While addressing the Indian community after inaugurating the Memorial, the Vice President said that India contributed immensely to the war effort in terms of both, men and material. Highlighting the contribution of India, the Vice President said that the Indian Corps won 13,000 medals for gallantry including 12 Victoria Crosses
